Omegle Alternatives: The Best Random Video Chat Sites

Omegle alternatives are the sites that absorbed its users after Omegle shut down on 8 November 2023. The demand never went away. People still want to press one button and find themselves talking to someone they have never met, and the sites below exist because that has not stopped being enjoyable.

This page ranks the twelve random video chat sites we would actually recommend, says what each one is good at, and sets out what to check before you use any of them. Every platform here has its own full review on this site, and every one was reachable and working the last time we checked.

We are an independent directory. No platform pays us for a rating, a ranking or a place in any list on this page.

The best Omegle alternatives

  1. The closest thing left to what Omegle was: press start, meet someone, press next, all in a browser with no account. It has run since 2009 and still has the largest pool of the sites here, which matters more in this category than any feature does.

    The classic Omegle experience

  2. The best of these on a phone, with built-in translation so you are not restricted to people who share a language with you. The useful filters sit behind a subscription, and its owner also runs dating products.

    Talking across languages

  3. An Omegle-style service that takes moderation seriously, and adds interest tags so a conversation has something to start from rather than nothing.

    Conversations with a starting point

  4. Gender and country filters with fast connections and users spread across more than seventy countries. It shows more advertising than most, and the free tier limits how much you can filter.

    Filtering who you meet

  5. One of the longest-running sites in the category, and it behaves more like a set of rooms than pure roulette, which suits people who want a conversation to last longer than one match.

Talking to the same person twice

  6. Unusual in running a large human moderation team alongside automated screening, with published bans for confirmed nudity. Browser only, and the audience skews French-speaking.

    Visible moderation

  7. Matches on shared interests rather than pure chance and requires an account, which is inconvenient and is also the reason it carries less bot traffic than its rivals.

    Fewer bots

  8. A clean interface with a country filter, which makes it a practical choice if you are practising a language. It has been running since 2015.

    Language practice

  9. Browser-based roulette with no account and nothing to install. It is smaller than the sites above, so expect to cycle through more people before a conversation takes.

    Trying it without signing up

  10. Interest tags and country selection, and it has grown quickly. The trade-off is that it requires signing in with Google or Apple, which its own marketing describes as no sign-up. It is not.

    Interest-based matching

  11. Deliberately pairs men with women rather than leaving it to chance, with no sign-up. It is a narrower idea than the rest of this list and it is upfront about that.

    Meeting the opposite sex

  12. A modern interface with gender and country filters, and a sensible middle ground when the largest sites feel overwhelming and the smallest feel empty.

    A middle-sized crowd

The score beside each platform is our overall editorial rating for it as a service, which is a different question from how close it is to Omegle. That is why a platform with a lower score can sit higher in this ranking.

Other random chat sites worth knowing

These did not make the top twelve, usually because they are smaller, more ad-heavy or aimed at a narrower audience, but they are legitimate sites rather than the copycats warned about below.

What happened to Omegle

Omegle ran from 2009 to 2023. Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, announced the shutdown on 8 November 2023 and replaced the homepage with a farewell message and a gravestone reading 2009 to 2023. The BBC, NPR and the Associated Press all reported it at the time.

He was direct about the reason: there can be no honest account of Omegle, he wrote, without acknowledging that some people misused it, including to commit serious crimes. The site had settled a lawsuit the week before, and he said the cost of operating it and fighting its misuse had become unsustainable.

Two things follow for anyone searching today. Omegle is not coming back, and no site using its name has any connection to it.

How we chose these alternatives

We started from every platform in our 1v1 video chat category, then kept only the ones built around random pairing: press a button, get matched with one stranger, decide whether to stay. Messaging apps that happen to have video calls, and dating apps where you choose who to talk to, were excluded, because they answer a different question.

From there we ranked by how well each one does the specific job Omegle did. Size of the matching pool came first, because a random chat site is only as good as the number of people waiting in it. After that we weighed moderation, how much the free tier actually gives you, whether an account is required, and how well it works on a phone.

Two things we did not rank on: how much a site spends on marketing, and whether it has an affiliate programme. Neither affects a position here, and the same rule applies across the site, as our disclaimer sets out.

Staying safe on random video chat

This category has a real problem and it would be dishonest to write about it without saying so. Omegle did not close for commercial reasons. Random pairing means you cannot choose who appears, and a minority of users exploit that.

What actually helps, in order of how much it matters:

  • Use a site with a visible report and block control, and use it rather than disconnecting in silence. Reports are what feed the moderation systems.
  • Assume anything you show can be recorded. The other person is a stranger with a camera pointed at a screen.
  • Do not give a full name, an address, a workplace, a school or a phone number, even after a conversation feels friendly.
  • Treat a request to move to another app, especially one with disappearing messages, as a reason to stop. Our guide to secure messaging apps explains what to look for instead.
  • Leave if you are asked for money, gift cards or crypto. This is the standard shape of a romance scam, and the FTC's consumer advice describes how it usually runs.
  • Assume the minimum age is there for a reason and respect it. Most sites on this list are 18+.

Our anonymous chat safety guide goes through the same ground in more detail, and the anonymous chat category collects the sites where staying unidentified is the point.

Beware of sites trading on the Omegle name

After Omegle closed, a number of domains appeared that use its name, its look or its exact wording to attract people looking for it. None of them is connected to Omegle, and the Omegle team has no involvement in any of them.

The tell is usually the marketing. A genuine alternative describes what it does. A copycat leans on the old name, promises the exact original experience, and often asks for a card or an account before it shows you anything. Several also exist mainly to serve ads.

If a site claims to be Omegle itself, or says it has brought Omegle back, it is neither. The shutdown announcement was explicit that the decision was final.

Choosing between them

If you want the closest experience to what Omegle was, start with Chatroulette at the top of the ranking. If you want to meet people outside your own country, choose a site with a country filter or built-in translation. If moderation matters most, pick one that publishes how it moderates, as Bazoocam does, rather than one that simply claims to be safe.

Whichever you choose, treat the first conversation as a test of the site as much as of the person. How quickly unwanted behaviour is dealt with tells you more than any feature list, and our guide to choosing a video chat app walks through the rest of the decision. If you are new to the format entirely, start with how to video call someone new before you pick a site at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is Omegle coming back?

No. Omegle shut down on 8 November 2023, and its founder said at the time that the decision was final. Any site using the name today is unconnected to it.

What is the closest thing to Omegle now?

Chatroulette keeps the same press-and-skip format in a browser with no account, and has the largest user base of the sites we rank. OmeTV is the closest equivalent if you would rather use a phone.

Are Omegle alternatives safe?

None of them is risk-free. The category has a documented problem with unwanted sexual content, and moderation varies widely between sites. Choose one with visible reporting tools, and read a safety guide before your first conversation.

Do I have to pay for any of these?

No. Every platform on this list is usable without paying. Several sell filters, priority matching or extra features, but the basic random chat is free on all of them.

Do I need an account?

Most of them do not. Chatroulette, OmeTV, Shagle, Chatrandom, Bazoocam, CamSurf, Joingy, LuckyCrush and Chatspin all work without one. Emerald Chat and Thundr require an account.

Which alternative has the best moderation?

Bazoocam publishes the most detail, running a human moderation team alongside automated screening. Chatroulette and Emerald Chat also describe automated screening with human review, though the results vary by site.
